How Australia is Increasing the Amount of Green Energy

It is generally accepted that we need to change the way that we generate electricity. The way we currently do it is producing all kinds of environmental damage. The goal is to meet our energy needs with green technology. In this regard Australia is at the forefront as they have implemented a number of policies that are intended to increase the amount of green energy they are producing. While there is still a long way to go they are definitely leading the way.

Recognizing the need to increase the amount of green energy that they produce the government of Australia has invested a great deal of money into developing these sources of energy. While improving ways to produce more green energy is an important step it is meaningless unless people are willing to use it. In that regard the government has started a campaign to encourage people to choose energy that is produced in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way. As part of this they have created an accreditation program in which an electricity company can get their source of power listed as being green energy so that consumers can be sure about what they are getting.

At the present time the government is relying on the belief that consumers will want to purchase green energy if they are given the option of doing so. As a result they are not currently offering any kind of financial incentive to get people to switch. Nevertheless there has been a substantial increase in the number of people who are using green energy. That being said there is still a long way to go so it may at some point become necessary to offer incentives to get people on board.

While the government is relying on customers choosing to use green energy they are also putting pressure on the energy companies to produce it. They have established a goal of having at least twenty percent of the country's energy needs meet by green technology by 2020. In order to help ensure this happens they have created a program that requires the energy producers to increase the amount of green energy they make available each year. Failing to meet the level that is required results in a financial penalty for the energy company. For consumers, the government also launched GreenPower.gov.au.

As part of the plan to increase green energy in Australia a lot of money has been invested in developing a wide variety of different technologies. While solar power remains the leading source of green energy there are a large number of other approaches being developed. Things like wind power and wave power are rapidly gaining on solar power in the amount of energy they are producing. It is hoped that eventually one of these technologies will establish itself as the dominant source of green energy so that the investment doesn't need to be divided between competing technologies.
